Lone writer at high-tech start-up?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Helen Griffith Jul 7, 2011. 11 Replies

What do people think about being the one and only writer at a start-up? I've generally avoided this in the past, but I'm considering it again. I've previously thought it was too much for one person…Continue

What professional groups do you belong to and why? What does the term "professional group" mean to you?

I have been a member of STC in the past (not currently) and still attend local STC chapter events when the speaker is of particular interest to me. I have found the local chapter to be mainly a handful of the same people that have been involved in it for decades. It has often not seemed very vibrant and current. Recently they have a new person organizing the speakers and they have been quite interesting. However, in general, I have found STC to be expensive for not much return. Is involvement…See More

"Pamela,   There is a (very long) thread via the Technical Writer Forum on LinkedIn on this very topic. I can't recall if this is an open group or not, so please forgive me if the link does not work. Either way, the gist of all the posts…"

"I'll dive in. I have held an STC membership on and off over the years... I let mine expire in 2004 after a brief run as president of my local chapter, and I am unlikely to ever renew it. My experience was similar to the way you describe yours.…"

"Mark, That is a really good point. I'm eager to hear other viewpoints on this and opinions on what is a "professional group" in today's technology-rich environment. Maybe that should have been the title of the discussion."

"I was a member of STC for many years, but dropped it a few years ago. The expense seemed pointless, and the organization's networking function seemed pretty much obsolete. STC is now trying to reinvent itself as a Web 2.0 organization, but one…"

Pamela, I definitely remember you. You were the only person I ever managed to get hired at Wind River. Ironically, I just got Christopher Gales aboard at another client of mine, in SF. Are you looking for alternatives, and if so can we talk in realtime?
